Minutes of Democratic party ZOOM meeting 4/6/21

Chairman Harrison brought meeting to order at 5;30.
Invocation given by Kenny Puckett.

• Minutes of March  2 meeting approved
Paula Goldman motioned. Bob Stockton seconded.

 • Democratic Women’s Report — Paula Goldman
Paula explained that the women brainstormed ideas for the Fish Fry. She indicated that these ideas could be discussed later at a date closer to the event, BUT the main suggestion needed to be dealt with more quickly. We suggest the event be held in the late afternoon and early evening to allow for working folks and families to attend.
Women briefly discussed speakers and strongly supported Stacy Abrams.
Women in favor of having the “Pot Luck” changed to some term meaning bring your own food according to the safeguards against Covid.  Aiming for fellowship. (See later notes: Pot Luck [but bring your own] for May meeting).
NEXT MEETING OF DEMOCRATIC WOMEN IS IN PERSON AT THE HOME OF ROSE ANNE NAPIER-RIDDICK IN McCORMICK. INVITATIONS WILL BE SENT TO ALL MEMBERS. Bring your own lunch, your own chairs, maintain social distancing, wear masks.

• Chairman Harrison: regarding the Fish Fry
Co-chair Arthur Banks has confirmed that he has contacted the cooks, and they are willing to participate this year.
Event will be held at the Senior Center.
Considering time change from 11 am to 2 pm  to  4 pm to 7 pm.
More plans will evolve as we get closer to the event.
We ask Angie Martin to print 200 tickets.
We plan to include DRIVE THROUGH, but since McCormick county has 44% vaccinations at this point in time, we feel confident we can proceed with in person celebration making sure to observe Covid restrictions.
Jerry Goldman announced that our 3rd Vice Chair Keldrick Freeman will be involved to get the younger folks to participate. We’d also like to approach former Sheriff candidate Wallace Middleton to invite his young supporters to get involved.
The question of placing ads prior to the Fish Fry was discussed. Placing ad prior to 9/18. Ad would announce change in time from 11 to 4 and suggest the more family oriented atmosphere
Possible speakers: Floyd Nicholson, Jaime Harrison. Jerry Goldman will contact Jaime Harrison ASAP to see if he is available to be our speaker.

• POT LUCK (BUT BRING YOUR OWN) FOR MAY 4 MEETING
We discussed the possibility of meeting in person observing all Covid restrictions: masks, social distancing. Everyone is to bring their own food and lawn chairs.Jerry Goldman has confirmed with George Selfridge on the use of Plum Branch Yacht Club pavilion for this event.
Marion Farina will bring microphone.
Paula Goldman will put the information in the Messenger.

• ELECTION COMMISSION

The General Assembly has established the Senate Confirmation of Election Commission. They will get to affirm or deny recomendations for the Election Commission — currently 5 people allotted but only 4 chosen: Dave Lorenzatti (D), Martha Brown (D), Larry Baker (R) and Rita Smith (R).)

• STATE CONVENTION
Will be held via Zoom on May 19.
Delegates that signed up for the 2020 convention are asked first. We have 7 places.
The delegates for the 2020 convention are:
Tobe Allen, Marion Farina, Jerry Goldman, Paula Goldman, Alonzo Harrison, Susie Kaeding, Mary Linsenmeyer, Donald Moss, Ann Marie Smith-Nash, Joan Stockton.
If the 7 spots cannot be filled from this group, the alternate list will be consulted. The secretary will contact each of these delegates to see who will be available for the 5-19 zoom session.

(Note that the current SC legislature has passed a law stating it is NOT necessary to inform the public 3 weeks ahead of the convention that it is happening.)

• PRECINCT PRESIDENTS
Still working on presidents for every precinct Alonzo will follow up on this.
Check DNC web page for video clip. (See web site ARTICLES OF INTEREST for the video.)
Henry Banks indicated no redistricting in McCormick yet as result of census, but he will try to find out the current situation.
Chairman Harrison suggested biggest growth in county is in Savannah Lakes Village, but he does not know how these precincts may be redrawn. Currently County Council districts 1, 4 and 5 are chaired by Democrats.

• MESSAGES FROM OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS
