Democratic Women meet 4-26-22

Picture
Mia Minutes of Meeting 4-26-22 at McCormick Library

Marion Farina called the meeting to order. Paula Goldman was away.

We welcomed newcomer Barbara Kilbourne from TN.

Marion reminded us of the upcoming primary June 14 and runoff (if  needed) 6/18

Reminder Candidates for the primary:
- Jackie Brown, District 5 County Council vs. Tamela White
- Governor: Joe Cunningham, Mia McLeod
- SC Senator: Angela Geter, Krystal Mathews, Catherine Fleming Bruce,

POT LUCK
Focuses on our local community so speakers will be those running in the primary election. Check the website HOME page for information about what to bring and when to come.

STIMULUS MONEY used in McCormick County:
• only 200 households in the county did not have fibre optic connection to the internet, so the American Rescue Plan will provide funds for those households
• financial assistance with healthcare coverage

Please keep in your prayers: Nate Andrews

• Discussion of JAG collection this quarter. Joan Stockton will contact Ms. Jennie Brantley since the term ends so soon and post on website what Ms. Brantley would like us to do.
JAG = Jobs for America's Graduates
Email from Ms. Brantley:
We can hold off until next year because they like to empty classrooms during the summer to clean.  You all have been such a blessing this year, and I hope you all know just how much all that you have done has been appreciated!
Jennie
Please check out ARTICLES OF INTEREST page for article celebrating JAG students who attended state JAG conference and won awards.

• Discussion to clarify that there are 2 groups requesting our assistance from the high school:LouAnn Grove / 138 Shenandoah for items for AVID.

Marion suggested that the push for gas expansion into McCormick is not a good idea because of the fracking issues. Estelle raised the issue of solar energy. She lived in Vermont and Vermonters rely on solar energy so why wouldn’t SC? Mary Thompson noted that Little River Electric does not have the capacity to store electricity in contrast to Duke Power which Greenwood has access to.

GETTING OUT THE VOTE
Noted that Ethel Canady chaired a group effort to go door to door in the last election. Cherry Brown noted that barbershops and beauty shops are another opportunity to connect with voters.

COUNTERACTING DISINFORMATION
Polly Walters suggest a FACT SHEET at the booth during Goldrush is another way of reaching voters. Worked well during the last Goldrush celebration. Polly agreed to chair a committee to explore this possibility and was joined by Melody Pike (melodyapike@gmail.com) and Barb Kilbourne. (bkcleome23@gmail.com)

JUNETEENTH celebration at Mims Foundation is another opportunity to reach voters.

POINTS TO CONSIDER FOR FUTURE ACTION
Finding a convenient time for party meetings because many younger voters have jobs and kids and are not available at noon nor at 5:30.

RECOGNITION of those who have contributed blood, sweat and tears to the party.
Some kind of recognition of their service. Examples: Ethel Canady, Helen Quarles, The Gilchrist girls: Ruth, Bert Patterson; Barbara Crawford, Sara Moss, Paula and Jerry Goldman, Sandy Greanya.

ACTION PLAN FOR DEMOCRATIC PARTY — Estelle shared what when she worked in Belize with her student nurses, they tackled the mental health problem in the county. 1 psychiatrist for 3 million people! Estelle built a model of a tree where each limb was a specific issue/problem and ACTION could be identified and worked on. Estelle will bring a prototype to the next meeting so we can discuss and see if it might work for us.

Issue raised about POLL WATCHING resources. When SC was under Dept. of Justice supervision of elections, poll watchers had a list of lawyers to consult in the event of an issue during the election. Joan called Voter Registration and learned those numbers provided by the party. SCDP: Trav Robertson says list of lawyers probably created by DOJ. So we rely on our Voter Registrar Sojourner Jennings for backup.

POLL WATCHING TRAINING this Saturday (4-30) at the McCormick Library at 2. Everyone is welcome. Check HOME page for details.
