Minutes of Democratic party ZOOM meeting 2/1/21
•  Call to order at 5:30 pm
•  Pledge of allegiance led by Chairman Harrison
•  Invocation by Ann Marie Smith-Nash
•  Minutes of December 1, 2020, meeting approved; motioned by Harrison and seconded by Bob Stockton.

• Democratic Women’s Report

1) Regarding the idea of registering high school seniors to vote, Paula Goldman and JoAnn Ritchie continued to work on this project. JoAnn created a packet of materials including copy of US Constitution and Bill of Rights as well as other voting information. We decided the folder would not identify the source as the Democratic party to satisfy the protest of undue Democratic party influence.
The ladies contacted the principal of the high school to see if
the folders could be give to the seniors on their birthdays. The principal felt the Voter Registration office should supply the folders and that the superintendent had to be consulted. But he was willing to personally hand out the folders. JoAnn and Paula are proceeding with meeting with the superintendent.

2) Mrs. LouAnn Grove, the AVID teacher (Advancement via  Individual Determination), requested snacks for her students. Paula is willing to funnel whatever snacks such as chips or anything packaged. When Paula has a sufficient amount, she will deliver them to Mrs Grove.

• 2022 Election Council District #2 and #5

#2 Bernie Hamby is current councilman. District includes Parksville, Modoc, Clark’s Hill and parts of SLV in Southwind.

#5 Earl Coleman is current councilman. District includes Plum Branch, Bethany and SR 283 area. Coleman has not indicated whether he will run again. Jerry Goldman suggested Alonzo Harrison run for this office. Alonzo said he was ready to retire from political office and would only run if no one else stepped up.

Paula asked for VoteBuilder list of voters in each of these districts so that we might see if someone living in each district might be willing
to run.

• Storage facility

We need storage space to house the 2 canopies, the large table and other materials for parades, booths, etc.
Various members reported in previous meeting on research into storage availability and cost. Tim Deason’s storage on Hwy 7 offers a 12x12  room for $50 a month. George Selfridge was contacted but has no storage available at Plum Branch Yacht Club. Alonzo Harrison offered space in the storage facility on his property that could house the 2 canopies, the large table. Harrison’s home is on Whitetown Road and more accessible to all party members. Besides the price is right.
Stocktons have the 4 banners.

• Jaime Harrison — DNC Chairman

Alonzo worked with Jaime during Alonzo’s Clyburn Fellowship. Jaime is strongly in favor of funding down ballot campaigns so Alonzo thinks more money may be flowing into SC for these campaigns.

In our discussion of the upcoming campaigns, we speculated how the state party can reorganize to accommodate the changed demographics of our state.

• Party Concerns

Jerry Goldman suggested we invite 3rd Vice Chair Keldric to recruit young Democrats.

We discussed finding out how other counties in SC have handled involving young Democrats. Alonzo offered to follow up on these ideas such as contacting Kimberly Bland (Wallace Middleton’s campaign manager) to inquire about how she involved the young people who worked on Middleton’s campaign.

Dem. party executive, Jay Parmley, has info. on training for leadership in party positions. Marion Farina attended the 2-1-21 zoom session: Train the Trainer following our meeting.

Bob Stockton’s suggestion of a  face to face meeting with Parmley to pursue ways of involving young folks was brought up again. We plan to arrange a meeting with Parmley in Columbia  in April or May.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN VOTING RESULTS PRECINCT BY PRECINCT, PLEASE REFER TO MARION FARINA’S EMAI 2/1/21.

• FUTURE EVENTS:

Fish Fry —Due to Covid-19, adjustments needed, but we need to begin planning for Fish Fry in March so we can be ready if Covid restrictions are eased.

Projected date is September 18 — week following Gold Rush.

We still need a chairman to oversee the event.

Senior Center and American Legion Building were considered as possible venues. Senior Center works well for drive through, inside seating as well as outside seating.

NEXT MEETING FIRST TUESDAY OF March (THE 2nd)
at 5:30 via ZOOM.

• Meeting adjourned at 6:20 to permit members to attend training session following the party meeting.

Special thanks to ZOOM hostess Marion Farina.

Respectfully submitted,
Joan Stockton, Secretary
