McCormick County Democratic Party meeting December 7, 2021
• Meeting called to order by Chairman Harrison at 5:30 • Invocation by Chairman Harrison
Democratic Women Report by Paula Goldman 1) Paula began by remembering Tobe Allen, former Vice Chair of Monticello precinct who passed away November 16, 2021. 2) View the website (mccormickscdemocrats.org) to view the Democratic Christmas tree in the Festival of Trees at the Grist Mill
Democrats who helped with the project include the ladies who made the white origami peace cranes and Rose Anne made more than 100 red roses (sign of love). Marion Farina helped Rose Anne decorate the tree. 3)Christmas Parade: Marion Farina created the theme. Paula Goldman, Leila Jackson, Sue (Leila's friend) Joann Ritchie, Tony Farina and Marion put the float together with the help of Antonio Sibert who provided the truck and flatbed trailer.
Democrats who marched in the parade were Paula Goldman, Jerry Goldman, Roseanne Napier-Riddick, Jo Ann Ritchie and Vivian Parker.
Riding on the float were Marion Farina as Mrs. Claus, Shakita Freeman, KeMarion, Keedric and Kydric Freeman, the family of Keldric T. Freeman, Leila Jackson and her granddaughter, Aaliyah Watson. Representative Anne Parks brought her four well-dressed dogs to add to the festivities. They all rode in the parade. 4) JAG project: the Democratic women filled a large box with donations that have been delivered to Mrs. Brantley at the High School. Currently another box is available to store your donations tonight. 5) If you wish to see the packages for the float that the ladies wrapped and brought to their meeting, drive by RoseAnne Napier Riddick’s home on Cherry Street in McCormick. Packages are on her front porch. 6) Please join in these activities next year. It builds party unity. 7) The Democratic party celebrated the opening of their own office building — the Don and Carol Fowler Center — on October 30. Goldmans and Stocktons attended.
REDISTRICTING County council discussed redistricting at their meeting November 16. (See website EVENTS page for full summary). Audience was standing room only.
Note that there is a second Redistricting meeting Dec. 8 at 4 pm by the non partisan McCormick Community Alliance. Brief discussion revealed that this group is actually an offshoot of the Republican party and Ellen Cook has been presiding at these meetings.
Currently County Council has 5 districts which were set up in 1991. At that time, council knew that the growth in the county would come from SLV and the council members planned to maintain the 3 Democrat-2 Republican balance on the council. They hoped to maintain the 3 minority districts 1 (Mt. Carmel), 4 (Plum Branch) and 5 (Bethany). This is about equal representation so that each person has a vote that counts. State of SC just passed redistricting at the state level that eliminated one of the 2 Democratic districts.
PARTY CONCERNS Jerry Goldman read a quote from an interview with Jim Collins who coined the phrase, the Stockdale paradox: “We must never confuse faith that we will prevail in the end — which we can never afford to lose — with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of our current reality, whatever they might be.”
Remember Debbie Hasbrouck who was struck by a deer and has some physical damage.
Remember Polly Walters who is facing knee replacement end of Jan.
NO MEETING IN JANUARY. NEXT MEETING IS FEBRUARY 1.
