12-29-20 Minutes of Democratic Women
ZOOM meeting

Hostess Marion Farina
Facilitator Paula Goldman

ANNE PARKS JOINS OUR MEETING
Representative Parks reported that the SC Congress meets January 12 for this 6 month session.
First order of business is the budget.
Second order of business is education.
5,000 children disappeared off the face of the educational earth in SC. Greenwood thanks to the Pandemic and the virtual/in-person challenge.
Greenwood’s superintendent wants every child to have a computer AND have access to broadband. Congress folks willing to promote companies willing to provide broadband.

Paula’s report:
1) Re: our decision to support the Democratic party in Lincolnton in getting out the vote for Senators Warnock and Ossoff, Paula reports that using the contact info. she talked with Virginia Williams and set up appointments for door to door canvassing. Paula showed up, but no one from Lincolnton did.

Polly Walters suggested the option of doing VIRTUAL WORK in your own home to support the Democratic candidates in Georgia. Contact Polly at <Paulawalters1@mac.com> for information about how you can participate in this activity.

The Georgia election is January 5.

2) Regarding the idea of registering high school seniors to vote, Paula Goldman and JoAnn Ritchie worked on this project. JoAnn created a packet of materials including copy of US Constitution and Bill of Rights as well as other voting information. The ladies contacted the principal of the high school and will contact him again in January to set up a meeting to discuss our suggestion and to plan follow up.

3) Storage
Marion mentioned that the Power Squadron had a smaller unit in the storage facility on route 7. Sandy Gresham was the Power Squadron person who handled that rental. Marion will forward Sandy’s contact info to Joan Stockton who will follow up and find details to present to the party at our Jan. 12 meeting.
Paula will check with Leila Jackson to see if there are any possible rental spaces Leila knows about.

4) Carol Williams reported on her initial meetings as a new member of the SLV POA. Carol welcomes any issues that we wish to bring before the POA Board not just as Democrats but as members of the community. Carol reports that member issues do not always make it to the Board meetings. She advised us about the procedures at these meetings and how to go about presenting our issues to the Board.

This discussion brought us to the incident that Ann Marie Smith-Nash experienced regarding destruction of her Biden sign in her yard and the racial slurs shouted by the drive-by trucker. Ann Marie made a hate crimes report to the police about this incident.

Other incidents were discussed briefly: Susan Ragland’s sign for example. Reference was made to Ellen Cook’s letter to the editor in which she alluded to Republican signs being damaged.

It was decided that Polly Walters will send out a notice requesting anyone who had campaign signs interfered with (damaged or destroyed) report that to Polly noting date of incident and degree of damage. We will compile a list of these damaged signs and present the results as coming from humane interests in SLV. Report will include Ellen Cook’s signs and someone is calling Ellen to find out who those people might be.

All this information will be forwarded to Ann Marie so she can have evidence of other sign damages to present along with her own experience.

5) In regards to our thank you to former SC Senator Floyd Nicholson, we got permission from the party to donate a check to Senator Nicholson’s favorite charity which is the food bank. Alonzo Harrison and Arthur Banks handled this contact and arranged for the presentation of the check Feb. 18. We want the Messenger to document this occasion with a photo and story.
