Minutes of meeting of Democratic Women June 28, 2022
Meeting began with Marion Farina sharing her most recent article. Marion asked us for input on her article: Critical Thinking. Look for Marion’s article in the Greenwood Index Journal and next week at the ARTICLES OF INTEREST page..
We welcomed Pat Snow’s sister Stephanie Blake, former navy lady for 22 years before moving to Wichita, KS, for 25 years.
Cherry Brown arrived wearing double masks because she was exposed to Covid in a recent meeting.
Paula shared the brochure for Juneteenth. Originally Barb Sibert had informed Paula that the Democratic party’s full page add could only be in black and white. Without informing us, that was changed and our full page add was not in color. Designed by Mike and Renee Finney, it was a significant contribution to the Juneteenth celebration.
Paula also made a correction to the information she supplied to our poll watchers: that anyone could vote at the administration building on election day. That is not the case. Voting on election day is done at the voter’s assigned precinct.
The group of women discussed their views on abortion — all acknowledging that the real issue has nothing to do with respect for life.
Joan: Scientists and theologians have not determined when life begins. When can the fetus exist outside the womb? Up to that point, is human life really present?
Paula noted that in Greenwood, the Republican candidate is asserting that the moment of conception marks the presence of human life. Paula encouraged us to urge Greenwood voters to vote for Democratic candidate Bill Kimler.
Cherry encouraged us to keep Nate and Veda Andrews in our prayers. They have travelled to Emory in Atlanta to discover the cause of his illness.
We discussed other locations and times for our meetings so as to enable other women to join us. Places such as Plum Branch’s New Hope Church, McCormick’s Bethany on South Main, Willington, Laurel Grove, Tallmadge Center and the McCormick Senior Center were mentioned.
Mary Thompson reminded us that the party’s offer to sponsor a meal for student athletes at the start of the fall season is still in the works. Mary and Byron are following up with Ms. Wideman to determine the best time to do this.
Paula reminded us that since our last meeting, the Democrats have been very active in participating in the SCDP State Convention, the Juneteenth parade on 6-18, poll watching training and then watching at the June 14 and 28 Primary elections, the June 5 meeting at a new location — Dara Harrison’s barn (which was well attended).
WELL DONE ALL. KEEP UP THIS IMPORTANT WORK.
Respectifully submitted,
Joan Stockton
