SCDP McCormick County Convention
Saturday, March 26
Nearly 75 McCormick County Democrats packed two meeting rooms at the Mims Community Center for the county convention.
Chairman Alonzo Harrison called the re-energized party to order to elect a convention chair, and County Councilperson Jackie Brown was unanimously elected.
Before she opened the convention, however, Paula Goldman read a list of the party’s accomplishments during Harrison’s six years of service, and presented him with a retirement gift. Harrison thanked participants for their support during the party’s dramatic growth in recent years.
Since the main purpose of the County Convention is to elect officers for the next two-year term,
Brown’s first order of business was to open the floor for nominations for a new county chair, and Cherry Brown was nominated and elected unanimously. Former County Councilman Byron Thompson was elected first vice chair, Mike Finney second vice chair and Keldric Freeman third vice chair.
After other officers were elected, new Party Chair Cherry Brown introduced candidates running for office: Kent Kelly for the public works commission, and Jackie Brown andTamala White for county council, district five. The primary election is set for June 14 and the regular election in November.

SPEAKERS
• Kent Kelly is running for CPW (Commission for Public Works) commissioner. This election will be held April 5 and is for the people who live in the city limits. Mr. Kelly proposes to make changes in rates for this service. Last month's bills were exorbitant.
• Jackie Brown is running in the primary June 14. Ms. Brown supports small businesses in McCormick.
• Tamela White is running in the primary with Jackie Brown. Ms. White supports building the infrastructure to accommodate larger companies who would hopefully provide jobs to keep our young people here.
